Flight Paths

First exhibited in 2017, Flight Path was a series of works for which I returned to working in oil paint after many years of exploring other media. The series comprises a number of identically sized panels in which expressive, abstract passages are combined with flat, geometric strips to set up a visual and emotional tension. They were inspired by an experience in the studio. Whilst ordering the colours on my glass palette, I noticed a movement across the surface: a reflection of one of the planes which constantly traverse the sky above the landscape of west London. This continuous flux, the arrival and departure of different experiences and cultures, is recollected in the visual diversity of the paintings. The panels themselves were exhibited with rhythmic spacing, echoing the way in which the planes are spaced as they circle to land.
